About Alan Johnston

Alan Johnston (b. 1945, Edinburgh) is a Scottish artist whose practice is rooted in drawing, mark-making, and a sustained engagement with space, light, and perception. Working primarily in charcoal, graphite, and wax on paper and linen, his works are spare and deliberate — each mark the result of deep concentration and an almost philosophical commitment to reduction. Johnston studied at Edinburgh College of Art and the Royal College of Art, London, and has exhibited internationally for over five decades. His work is held in major public and private collections across Europe and beyond, and he is regarded as one of the most important figures in European conceptual drawing.
